Gotham City Building: Atlas Bar Gala Opening

I would think that if Bruce Wayne is real, and in Singapore, he would probably own a building like this:

5561e01f08bf27a48dff466bb10106b4.jpg

Who knows, maybe he does exist.

There is a really swell bar inside this building called Atlas Bar and I was invited to perform my magic that evening. Upon entering the building, you immediately get a sense of luxury and posh. They serve great gins and the vibe is very much like the Great Gatsby.

Well dressed gentlemen and ladies, excellent vibes and brilliant drinks, what more can one ask?

Maybe magic, the really sleek kind.

And of course, the crescendo of the night, the unveiling of the gin tower.

Really enjoyed the nigh!

iPad Magic on Stage For Gala Dinner in Hong Kong

In January, Alexander and his team were specially flew to Hong Kong for a Gala dinner. This gala dinner was to celebrate the company's high growth in 2016. Which that in mind, they wanted a show that is never seen before as well as showcase their company.

iPad Magician Hong Kong

The crowd was immensely engaged by Alexander's sleek style of iPad Magic. They went wild when he "painted" the name of their company on his iPads.

After it was painted, Alexander changed it to their official logo and pulled it out.

This sequence was particularly enjoyable for the crowd because it fostered a strong sense of identity for them. Alexander was commended by the board of directors after the performance!

iPad Illusionist at an Multi National Corporation (MNCs) Event

Performing MNCs tend to be challenging for a lower tier magician because the crowd comes from a diverse background.

This means 2 things:

  1. The material you perform for one group might not be suitable for the next group
  2. You might have to perform in a different language in the same event
Asia iPad Magician

Typically MNCs consider not only the experience of the magician and type of magic they present, they also prefer performers who have international experience. This is important especially for a roving performer who mingles and engages his audiences in a non-passive way (in contrast to a musician).

Thus far, I have been booked to perform in USA, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Egypt, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia. Every culture has their own social rules; through reading up and interacting with a diverse audience, one can be equipped with cultural norms that allows the performer to ease into conversations better.

In this event, I was performing for ED & F Man. The crowd consisted of Singaporeans, Filipinos, Mainland Chinese and Caucasians. You can notice some subtle differences in the pictures when I perform for these groups of people. For some groups, I tend to be a bit more subdue, and for some I tend to be more expressive. I give them space to react according to their cultural rules.

Who Doesn't Like Mickey Mouse? (iPad Magic at Disney South East Asia)

"When you wish upon a star...."
Disney's "Pinocchio"
iPad Magic Mickey Mouse

I think it will be hard to find a person who does not like Disney. The whole idea of a world that is fueled by imagination and that nothing is impossible enthralls the kid in everyone of us.

Cartoons and animations have always fascinated me. In their world, nothing is impossible. Some of my magic is inspired by the cartoon world. Inspired by Coyote and Road Runner (Warner Brothers), one of the effects that I do involves drawing a black hole in the iPad and making coins disappear into them.

So when I was requested to do something for Disney's Service Award, I was psyched. I was creating a customized iPad Magic app to make The Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey appear out of a Fantasia poster.

iPad Magic Disney Mickey

Apart from that, I also did the other apps that I created over the past 2 years. The general appeal of the iPad Magic for the animators and creators working in Disney, is that they literally see the animation inside my iPad transcend digital boundaries and appearing in the physical world.

You can see that they enjoyed themselves very much!

Shipping 2030: Pushing the Edge of Technology

On the November 30th 2016, Alexander Y. was invited to perform at the Singapore’s Shipping 2030 Conference, held at Suntec City’s Convention Centre. It was a large event, with many guests, managers and bosses, discussing about the topic of innovation and technology in the shipping and international purchasing industry. As such, Alexander was to perform his signature iPad magic, to compliment the event’s theme of technology and innovation.

iPad Magician Asia Conference

Alexander arrived at the location early, and obtained the further details of the event from the event organizer. He then proceeded to attend a VIP’s talk on Innovation and Technology, and immediately began performing once the talk was over.

He began performing with his signature iPad magic, and left a few Europeans speechless with his opening act. They demanded him to do it again, and, at their request, he blew them away for a second time. At the end of his first small group’s performance, the spectators left him a round of applause, establishing his presence and letting everyone know that a magician is in the event.

After so, Alexander then went on to numerous tables, using his iPad to perform out of the ordinary stunts, leaving the attendees of the convention with smiles, cheers and lots of applause. There was even a waiter who stopped by to watch his performance, and he too, couldn’t help but gasp.

As Alexander was performing, a few VIPs were so entranced, that they even followed Alexander around as he performed from table to table! However, even after watching him dazzle the spectators over and over again, they too ended up clapping and smiling at the end of his performances!

At the end of Alexander’s timeslot, he approached the event manager and thanked her for inviting him for the evening. In addition, he also performed an amazing effect with his business card, leaving her jaw wide open.

Dark Skies, Tall Buildings, Al Fresco Wine And Magic

On the November 23rd of 2016, Alexander was invited to entertain the guests for Expat Living Magazine’s event at Mont. The event consisted of roughly 80 people and there was great food and drinks for the guests. He performed his specialized iPad magic, and did not fail to amaze the crowd.

Alexander arrived at the location early, and spoke to the event manager before proceeding to the rooftop alfresco area. The view was beautiful, and the majestic Marina Bay Sands could be seen overlooking the Singapore River. It was a sight to behold, as the sky was promenade pink, with the sun crawling out of the sky. Alexander walked around the dining area, preparing for the guests to arrive, and striking small conversations with the waiters and waitresses.

Soon after, the sun had set, and the lights from the financial district lit up in the distance showering the Singapore River with many bright lights. The river was covered with fairy lights and ripples from the movement of its waves, setting the tone of the night along the Singapore River. It, was show time.

Alexander began his show by approaching a group of Caucasians, and performed his full repertoire with them. His iPad, his partner in crime, stunned and amazed them, leaving them mind-blown and applauding to announce the magician’s presence. The show went on and Alexander continued doing what he does best, entertaining the guests with finely crafted iPad magic.

iPad Magician Expat

After covering numerous tables, the sky had turned fully dark, and it was night already. Surrounded by tall buildings and bright lights, Alexander continued on the rooftop of Monti to bring smiles and amazement to Expat Living Magazine’s guests. Everyone was happy and the event was going extremely smoothly.

To end off the night, Alexander ended his last performance with a kicker ending! The spectators were shocked and delighted at the same time, giving him a warm round of applause before Alexander moved on to talk to the event organizer. After thanking the event organizer, Alexander then made his move and began his journey to his next show that evening…

I had such a good time performing for the guests for the event. I understood from the client that because they were the top clients of HSBC, they wanted them to be treated to something spectacular, even if that meant flying me from Singapore.

"The Key is Right Here" : Showcasing the 4 Pillars of Sky Premium (an iPad Magic Launch)

A challenge that most marketeers face is that they run out of ideas to showcase a non-tangible product. For example, how do you showcase security? (See here!) How do you showcase a concierge service (read below!)

iPad Magician Asia

When I was consulted to design a sequence for Sky Premium, I too had some difficulties in trying to bring forth the ideas to life. Hence instead of focusing on what the company can do, I focused more on what their clients will experience.

The four pillars of their services pertains to:

  1. Travel
  2. Wine and Dine
  3. Shopping
  4. Wellness

With this in mind, I brainstormed activities that are most associated with these pillars. Next I thought about the type of magic that would be most appropriate for this.

Singapore iPad Magician

A specific request the client wanted was to connect my act to the next segment where the emcee would talk about the "Key" to "The Good Life". Bearing that in mind, I had to end with that tagline so that my act can segway seamlessly into the next.

Enjoy the good life and check out the end result below!

In collaboration with Singapore Tatler, Tempur had a smaller celebration and invited the guests from Tatler to experience the weightlessness.

Wanting to do something different from them, I designed a sequence with my iPad to showcase the weightless motif and give the guest an opportunity to feel the Tempur Material (which is commissioned by NASA to be used in Space).

Here what the Tempur and Tatler team had to say:

"Thank you Alexander and helping us out!
It was a real pleasure meeting you and thank you for the brilliant show! Looking forward to working with you again soon.

"Hi Alex,

"Terrific Colours, Stylishly Compact!" - A Customized iPad Product Launch (VIP Launch)

Designing a product launch is never an easy task, it takes a lot of creative energy, trial and error and rehearsals.

Imagine this, I was sent a brief for a launch of a printer with the tagline "Terrific Colours, Stylishly Compact". And a specific request that a VIP must be involved in the act.

How do you work from here? What type of imagery does this elicit in your mind?

While it is vague, I did my research on the Canon printer and found other neat features it has. With these features in mind, I knew objectively what I wanted to showcase. The terrific colors it has, its stylishness and its mobile-friendly capacity.

iPad Magic Product Launch Canon Printer

With this said, the magic also has to reflect this. The visual assets I use must also reflect this.

The total time I took to design this 3 minute sequence:

  • Conceptualization: 10 hours
  • Programming: 30 Hours
  • Designing Visual Assets: 5 Hours
  • Designing the Prop: 3 Hours
  • Fabrication of Props: 10 Hours
  • Rehearsals: 10 Hours

You can see that I make sure every detail is taken care of. I had to program the iPads such that the VIP can use it intuitively.

You can hear how much the crowd enjoyed this sequence, as well as learning about its features. See the video below!

Hope you enjoyed that!

Entrepreneur Speaker at Tech Conference 2016

The journey of an entrepreneur can be a long, lonely and tiresome one. I've had friends who started out their business and gave up less than a year into it.

Slush 2016 iPad Magician Illusionist

Most of the times, people only see the success part of it while overlooking the immense hardship one has to go through to get there. I was very fortunate to be able to share this journey of entrepreneurship at an innovation/tech conference held in Singapore called 2016 2016.

It was quite stressful (as well as a privilege) to speak right after Hossan Leong. But I think it turned out quite okay, just a little rushed.

Tell me what you think! I come in after the 22 minute mark:

Actually, the content struck the hearts of many listeners. And I even got a Tech in Asia feature on the talk!

I was booked to entertain the guests with my iPad Magic and I had special request to create an illusion on the iPad that would foster a sense of identity for the audiences.

The smiles on their faces were priceless.

The excitement, wonder and amazement at his perfectly executed illusions were all that mattered at the end.

I would definitely recommend him to any one looking for something magical (no pun intended) to add to that special occasion.

He’s also a gem of a person, really going all out to make things seamless for the organiser.

Product Launch Ideas

GILLETTE: THE BEST A MAN CAN GET

When it comes to launching a product, there are several ways to do it. You can simply place a cloth over the product and reveal it, you can have a fancy box apparatus that would reveal it or you can reveal it while also showcase the qualities of the product (and that's what we did here!)

Gillette iPad Magic Launch

In line with my belief of "showing them, not telling them", I identified the key features of the product, which was a well lubricated shave. Then I brainstormed on how I can showcase this concept through magic, and at the same time, launch their banner.

The keywords in my thoughts were: beard, shave, cream, clean.

And after much discussing with the agency, we came out with the idea of having shaving cream, applied on beard, and after shaving it off, the image of the banner would appear. And thereafter, I would pull the banner out for photo ops.

A few more ideas:

  • If you are launching a hotline, I can programme a phone in the iPad and have the VIP to dial the hotline, it would appear on the iPads and then the numb er can be pulled out.
  • Launching a painting, or a poster? I can "paint" it with a brush on to the iPad and have it pulled out.

The possibilities are endless, my team and I will make sure that our magic is cogent and related to your product.

While the base colour is white, I added subtle hints of red to create a sleek and stylish look.

Designing a Customized Illusion Show: Singtel Mambo Jambo Retro Night

In November 2015, I had a brief discussion with Singtel on developing a show as part of their customer appreciation event that would be held in mid-to-late 2016.

Singtel Magician

The concept was finalized to be about nostalgia and reminiscing the past, witnessing how technology has evolved and how Singtel is at the forefront of this evolution.

Singtel also wanted to showcase their latest Mobile Threat Prevention service that blocks and removes malware in mobile devices. My skills in programming and iPad Magic allowed me to be able to showcase this with a visual simulation of the service.

Singapore Magician

With this in mind, my magic has to have the element of nostalgia without being old fashion. I designed 2 illusions to showcase various objects from the past. The first illusion was a prediction type effect where a spectator would think of a toy from the 80s and it would match my prediction. And the second illusion was to make a retro toy levitate in mid air.

Check out the video below:

The show progressed to a more modern feel where I borrow a spectator's phone and have it appear inside a Singtel case that has been on stage throughout.

Singapore iPad Magician
iPad Magician Singapore

The next segment was the Mobile Threat Prevention feature where I performed my brand of iPad Magic to showcase the effects of malware and the capabilities of the service.

iPad Magician Singapore
Singapore iPad Magician

While this was technically the last illusion feature of my show, I wanted to end with an illusion that would punctuate the show as well as show our appreciation to the clients.

For this routine, I made a wine bottle appear and then invited the VIPs to toast the audiences.

Singapore Magician

The whole process of designing, coding, rehearsing and manufacturing took about 4 months of hard work. But at the end of the night, when the audiences cheer with applause, you know it is worth it!

Magic Moments During a Wedding

"Anyone who is looking for a close up magician should look no further than Alexander Yuen. Alexander was hired for our wedding held at W Singapore Sentosa Cove. His unbelievable magic under our noses at dinner left everyone in awe by the seemingly impossible things which he was doing. He was professional and non-intrusive in his manner. I would have no hesitation in recommending Alexander to anyone wishing to hire his services.
Thank you once again for your contribution in making the evening so enjoyable and memorable. I hope to find another occasion when we can experience your magic again!"
Best Regards
Wenchuan
Wedding dinner at W Hotel (Sentosa Cove)

There is a secret tune that would play in my mind every time I walk into a wedding dinner, getting ready to perform my magic.

It goes "Magic moments, when two hearts are caring....".

The classic song by Perry Como. Fell in love with it when I first heard it.

Best Singapore Wedding Magician

But this tune also serves as reminder, that I am at extremely privileged to be a part of the union of two loving hearts, and it is my job to create a magical experiences, not just for the couple, but also for those who are there to witness this joyous occasion.

Weddings typically consist of both, the eldest members of the families and the youngest members of the families. While I can speak fluent English and Mandarin, language might be a barrier when they speak only dialects. For these guests fortunately, I am able to convey my magic through the effective use of facial expressions, body language and eye gaze. These additional tools I've picked up from my theatre training have served me very well and allows me to engage all guests of different languages and cultures.

At the end of the night, I play that tune again in my head, and I feel satisfied knowing that it is always, always a blessing to be a part of a union of love.

Congrats to Wenchuan and wife! Thank you for having me at your wedding at W Hotel, Sentosa Cove.

Singapore Magician at HP's DaaS Launch Activation

When it comes to customized magic, my motto is simple:

Don't Tell Them, Show Them.

Instead of adopting a one-way dialogue, I engage my audiences through magic. Using magical effects, I exemplify product features and showcase them to the audiences. Take a look at the diagram below, it might look very technical at first, but with sufficient thought, it can be simplified by magic.

HP DaaS

For this HP DaaS activation, the objective of the performance was to:

  1. Excite the staff about this new service that HP is offering
  2. Educate them on the key features of the service
  3. Quiz them on the services with prizes
Singapore Magician

The way I got around designing the magic was to first understand the brief and develop a script that is cogent. After that, I would think further about how I can show these concepts to the audiences. For example, the DaaS service allows quick and efficient disposal of HP's technological products at the end of the cycle, to showcase this, I make a deck of cards disappear in the hands of an audience member while reiterating the disposal component of DaaS. The training I have as a psychologist have helped me in such divergent thinking. This is something that needs to be improved in most Singapore magicians.

Magician Singapore
Singapore Magician

Being a skilled professional who dresses well certainly made it easier for me to perform in this corporate environment. Since impressions are formed within the first few seconds of interaction, I made sure that I was well dressed and introduced myself with a pleasant demeanor. Of course, being able to perform amazing magic is a must.

With the help of an amazing team from PMG, we were able to quiz the staff and gave them prizes that were thematic to the activation.

Magician Singapore

In sum, it is not just enough to be able to perform strong magic in such environment. One must be able to understand reports and briefs, communicate effectively and engage audiences visually and intellectually.

"[Through the iPad], the eyes trick the brain"

When magic is visualize so vividly on the iPad, the eyes really fool the brain to think that magic is really happening. Audiences have told me that they actually feel something on their palms. And I truly believe that this is the next level of iPad magic.
