Crafting a Customized Virtual Magic Experience for SGX

The year 2020 is truly a year of innovation and change for me as a performer and a creator. Because of the social distancing policies and the restrictions on live events, most of my customized magic performances had to be adopted onto a virtual platform. This was truly not an easy task as I had to think outside the box to recreate the same experience as if the event was live.

Alexander Yuen Virtual Magic Sow

I had the wonderful opportunity to work with SGX in creating a customized virtual magic show which involved their key messages of community, trust and partnerships at the most recent FIA's Asia Derivatives Conference.

We worked hand in hand to curate a script that embodies these key messages. In this show, we had magic illusions which involves partners of SGX.

We structured interactive pieces with highly visual magic to capture the audiences and cogently shared the main key message through these illusions.

I am very grateful for the learning opportunity while working with SGX as well as the opportunity to be able to showcase my work.

Unique Concept for Virtual Magic Shows: Make your CEO appear before his speech!

It has been such a wild ride doing virtual shows and the best part of it is that I am able to design magic and storyboards that are out of the norm.

While virtual magic shows begin their show in a standard way, for this project, we wanted to start with a bang!

VIP Illusion Virtual Show

My team and I recently did a virtual show for Keat Hong Constituency and we came out with the idea to make their MP appear before the show.

After some sessions of brainstorming, the idea went like this:

  1. We are waiting for the MP to arrive for the commencement of the show

  2. MP is caught in traffic

  3. MP calls Alexander (myself) to teleport him over

  4. Alexander teleports MP over

It was a brilliant idea and we storyboarded it to fit the concept.

Check it out here!

The New Normal: A Virtual Conference by PMI Singapore Chapter (Symposium 2020)

The New Normal: A Virtual Conference by PMI Singapore Chapter (Symposium 2020)

I had the delightful pleasure of performing at the Opening Ceremony in Symposium 2020 last week organized by Project Management Institute Singapore.

I want to first congratulate the team in making it all possible! They have obviously done their due diligence in testing the system, Remo and explored all contingencies to ensure a smooth conference.

Alicja Kocanda and Praveen Dayal - Co-chair

Stefany Maranghos and Alicja Kocanda - Speaker Management

Aishwarya Prasad supported the actual event in the background.

I had the great pleasure of working with Alicja and her team to ensure a seamless integration of magic into the opening ceremony.

Virtual Conference Magician Alexander

Contrast to the previous years, this conference was 100% held online.

The event was all set to be physically held and when the pandemic hit, Alicja converted the event from a physical one to a virtual one.

All the speakers dialed in before the time of their talk, they all effectively and engagingly used technological tools like voting options and the live chat to engage the guests.

The smoothness of the conference was not a coincidence and I would like share 2 lessons I’ve learnt from being part of this virtual conference.

Be Prepared

True to a Scouts’ motto, “Be Prepared” is one of the things that are easily said but difficult to do as there are so many things that can go wrong. The team had obviously took pains to stress test their system and finding contingencies to problems that might happen.

There were little to no dead time in the transition of the speakers. One of the main reasons I believe is that 2 weeks before the conference, I was asked to do a technical run through on the system and to test the various functions necessary to execute the show. I am certain that all the speakers had to get comfortable during this technical rehearsal as well.

I discussed with Alicja on various methods to maximize engagement and these ranged from using the whiteboard to the live chat function.

Prior to the show, Alicja also made sure that I was aligned in the theme of the Symposium “Adaptive Leadership Mindset” and gave me source materials on learning Project Management Processes. This is particularly helpful for me in customizing my magic for this.

Engaging the Audiences

The inherent pain point of a virtual type event is that it creates a forth wall between the speakers and the audiences. However, I would argue that through the use of effective communication, a virtual event can have more interaction than a traditional event.

In my show, I use the live chat function to get volunteers and to see comments and feedback in real time. This allows me to cater better to the audiences.

Also, usually in a live performance, audible side comments are generally disruptive in nature. However in this virtual platform, the audiences were having fun and sharing their appreciation for the magic that they saw.

Alexander Yuen Virtual Magic Shows

Apart from that, I would also share that there were 2 critical factors that allows for maximum engagement:

  1. Content that is relatable

  2. Timeliness of engagement

For this opening ceremony, I designed my magic to be personalize to the audiences and to the theme. Without a personal touch in the content, it would feel like they are simply watching a video and would naturally take a passive role in consuming the content. Having customized my content for this, the audiences were eager to participate in the magic.

Secondly, the timeliness of engagement is crucial for a virtual event especially during the transition from speakers. And this is demonstrated by the emcee, Alicja, where she immediately comes into view when a speaker has some technical difficulties. 10 seconds of dead time on stage feels like 10 minutes to the audiences and she wasted no time in making sure that the feeling of nothingness is reduced.

In conclusion, I believe that virtual events are a strong contender of physical events in light of the current pandemic, there are still many lessons ahead to learn and many opportunities to maximize the potential of a virtual conference through the effective use of technology.

Designing a Virtual iPad Magic Show for Online and Hybrid Events

Comment

Designing a Virtual iPad Magic Show for Online and Hybrid Events

Constrained by the circumstances of COVID19, there is an impending need to adapt and change the way I perform my iPad Magic.

There are a few concepts in the show that is exemplified in my show with huge amount of success. I currently perform regularly at business meetings, conferences and events virtually.

1. Interaction through a Different Mode

iPad Magic Virtual Show

There is a common saying that if the audiences wanted to watch magic, they could easily log on to Youtube to do so without having a need to hire a magician for an online magic show.

However, for magic (contrasted to other art forms like singing and juggling), we have the ability to interact with our audiences.

The challenge now is to make interaction organic rather than forced; I have seen a virtual show where the magician chooses his own card and then proceeds to find it! This type of performance mentality limits what a virtual magic show should be and it showcases the lack of thinking on the magician’s part.

I structure my magic to be easily participative. The magic involves simple instructions and an openness that is at the same level of as if you were in the same room as I was.

Hence to the magician who chose his own card and then find it, a simple solution is to have a member of the audience to say stop as you deal the cards down for a fair selection. (Its easy when you give it more thought!)

2. Personalize Entertainment

A Virtual Show should feel as close as possible like a physical show. In my show, Digital on Digital, I apply 2 layers of personalisation in my show. The first is to add a signage to show that this show is meant for the, and them only. This can also be seen in the shows done by my team, Front Row Seats and Magic on Demand.

On a deeper level, I customize my magic content to showcase the audience’s branding or concepts. In a recent sales networking virtual performance, I programmed and designed various products of the company to be used as part of the magic.

iPad Virtual Magic Show

3. Tell a Story

The way I designed my show to encourage engagement and interest was to build a full show with a cogent theme from start to end. This way, the narrative of the performance is easily understood and the audiences are then compelled to the take part in the magic.

Virtual Magic Show

While this seems like common sense, many of the virtual shows that I have watched seems like a series of magic demonstration (“Let me show you a trick”), rather than a show. Without a thematic structure to the performance, it makes no difference for the audiences to turn to Youtube and watch a playlist of magic tricks

4. Bonus Tip: Production Value

I take pride in my magic and I also take pride in making sure that the audiences consume the show in the best way possible. All my shows are performed in Meta Illusions’ Studio with photography lighting and a 3 camera set up. This allows me to change the camera angle to showcase the magic in the best view possible. This also prevents digital fatigue where the audiences are facing a static screen view.

Hope you enjoyed my thoughts of Virtual Magic Show! I would love to be a part of your virtual event in the future. For more information, you can drop me an email or visit here!

A large portion of my virtual shows are performed in a context of a business meeting. This is particularly useful for managers running virtual meetings with his/her team who are working from home and wish to have a small surprise for the team as part of a morale boost.

This show itself is particularly popular as it involves mind reading and live engagement with the audiences.

National Day Singapore Magic Videos

This year is Singapore’s 55th Birthday and it is an unprecedented celebration because it has be held online due to COVID 19.

Traditionally, my team from Magicians of Singapore and I would perform our magic live at community events in anticipation of National Day. However this year, we are doing a mix of virtual and hybrid magic shows.

In the same spirit, I created 3 pieces of magic digitally to celebrate Singapore’s independence in my own special way.

Check it out here:

These were a lot of fun to create! I was very lucky to be able to share this with Singapore’s Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong and I am very honoured that he replied that he enjoyed this:

“Dear Alexander, Thank you for sharing your magic tricks with me! Also caught the one where you explained the significance of our National Flag. Good job for creatively melding both the physical and the digital in your tricks! Wishing you and your family a happy National Day, and a good long weekend ahead! Warm regards, LHL”

I truly think that even though the circumstances of COVID19 has made us change the way we engage with each other, the spirit and love for Singapore still remains unchanged!

Happy Birthday Singapore!

Staying Home, Staying Safe: An Update in times of COVID19

Staying Home, Staying Safe: An Update in times of COVID19

Hello!

I hope you have been well and going through the difficult time with a hopeful and positive mindset. As of writing, it seems like the situation in Asia is getting slightly better and several other continents have been dampening down on the numbers too.

It has been a while since I have pen my thoughts on this space, and I thought I should document what has transpired in what we can now call an unusual time. This unusual time is filled with uncertainty, many events have been postponed indefinitely and most of them have been cancelled. This is a tough time for anyone in the events industry.

Making a difference in your own way

While the COVID19 situation has caused the world to go into a pause mode, we should look outward if we have the opportunity and privilege to do so. Rather than lamenting about the lack of events (hence income), I am certain there is something we can all do to spread positivity and hope.

I decided to pivot the resources I had to create mask hooks for frontline workers who had to wear mask over a long duration. The extended usage of the mask caused a numbing sensation behind the ears and these 3D Printed Hooks eases the discomfort. I have seen elderly stuffing tissue papers behind their ears to prevent such pain and decided that giving these away was the right thing to do.

I was very luckily that a local newspaper caught on to the story and gave me a feature, which in turn allowed a larger group of people to reach out to me.

Alexander Yuen 3D Printing Magic

Till date, I have sent over 250 pieces of mask hooks to nurses, frontline workers, delivery men and women, security guards, F&B staff and several others. It has been very fulfilling to be able to use the skills I had for my customization magic into a practical use in COVID19.

I think in times like these, rather than focusing on a “me” mentality, asking for likes and shares on Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok, pushing and selling tickets to online performances or selling books that mass produced and changing only the cover, we should all strive to see what real difference we can make in the real world.

This is the reason why I decided to do something that diverges from my core expertise of magic.

My sentiments is summed by this quote I penned in my personal journal.

“While the light at the end of the tunnel may seem dim and distant, if we turn our light outwards, the journey there together will be illuminated and smoother”

Yours Truly

And that is why I have great respect for mentalist Tom Devoe (See article below) who is doing probono performances for frontliners rather than using his opportunity to make a quick buck.

Is magic still relevant in these times?

More than before, we are starting to consume much more content off the internet. While you can watch several of my iPad Magic footage here, I do not actively perform magic on online streaming platforms. I truly believe the core essence of magic is in its interactive and its ability to connect on a deeper level. While this is not impossible to do over a webcam, performing passively over Zoom or a video streaming channel serves no further participation than watching a prerecorded video on Youtube.

While I have done several shows that I do over the webcam (even prior to the COVID19 situation), it is highly interactive and participative where the audiences watching it plays a large role in pivoting and determining the course of the magic. I enjoy such a performance very much despite it being over a streaming portal.

Covid19 Magic Singapore

I was featured on The New Paper and gave my honest thoughts on the situation. While I strongly believe there is room for magic in such difficult times, magicians should be very careful about how they craft their performance. There is nothing more boring than watching a performance that feels like it was pre-recorded, time and effort should be spent in crafting an experience rather than a passive demonstration of sleight of hand.

The Light at the end of the Tunnel

Working from home, practicing stringent hygiene, contract tracing is what we call the “New Normal”.

I think when it comes to entertainment, there is room for adaptation and even possibly creating something innovative because of the current situation.

My team and I are continuously working towards the goal of creating hope through our magic, and in the time to come, we will be more than ready to take on live performances when that happens.

In the meantime, stay home and stay safe!

Innovation at Apple Store - Thinking about Magic

In the earlier blog post, I shared about the talk I gave at Apple Store Singapore. In this talk, I went over several aspects of innovation and how you can think about creating something innovative.

Today, I would like to share with you more on the end results of my thoughts and creations. I think the term “end result” is a huge misnomer because what you are seeing is a constant work in progress; technologies change, my thoughts shaped by my experience change, and how I feel about my work also changes. These forces me to rethink about these acts.

This is one of my favorites and it is called, “If Money Grew on Trees”:

To close this topic of innovation and creativity, I would like to share with you the act with the lightbulb that I was talking about in the last post.

So I had the pleasure of performing to Glay and actor Yu Shirota. But embarrassingly, I did not know the scale of their popularity and performed for them as I would in any corporate event.

There was no gushing or fanboying, I performed for them straight on. It might seem kind of weird but I think that might have been a good approach. Their reactions were genuine, and they are there to relax. So they no longer feel the need to maintain a certain image.

And at the end of the performance, I was told by the organizers, “Oh did you know that was “so and so”?” I admitted that I did not to much surprise cos they are really big in Japan.

Check out their reactions in this video:

I love the Japanese hospitality and the enthusiasm of the audience. And I cannot wait to be back!

A Celebration of Super Powers

A Celebration of Super Powers

In this Marvel filled age, it is easy to think of someone with super powers as extremely strong, fast and with godlike powers. However, I think Super Powers come from ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

  • A teacher who imparts knowledge so that his/her students become wiser, is a super power.

  • A simple act of making someone smile, with magic, is a super power.

  • A person who holds the lift for you, so that you won’t be late, is showing kindness, and that is a super power.

And the list goes on. If you look around you, you will be pleasantly surprised to see beautiful ordinary people, doing extraordinary things.

Some time ago, I was asked to perform for the Association of People with Special Need’s Charity Dinner. Seated amongst the guests is Senior Minister Sim Ann. This made me very nervous, but I was reminded by a team member that ministers are also ordinary people that does extraordinary things.

This show was a special one to me because in the crowd seated teachers and therapist who are there because they choose to make a difference in the student’s live. They have my full respect for taking on a tremendous task.

The show was very well received with much “wooo”s and “ahhh”s and spontaneous applause. And I truly enjoyed this show because deep in my heart I know I was making a difference to the audiences. See, super powers right?

I woke up the next day with a pleasant surprise with a comment from Senior Minister Sim Ann on my social media.

On my own level, it was a success for me because I finally partitioned a large portion of my time in creating this piece of work. It also brought magic closer to the domain of the arts.

Here is a segment of my show, hope you enjoy it!

There are several acts that I am keeping it private except to events organizers and clients to prevent any form of thievery of ideas. But if you are a potential client, drop me an email below! I will be happy to share my work!
